![]() As it is, this is a good choice for a USB flash drive but not an outstanding one.Ĭompare the Lexar JumpDrive Lightning's features and performance with other flash drives. The i-FlashDrive HD has a USB 2.0 connector on one side and a 30-pin connector on the other it. If the Lexar had a modernized design to hide or protect the drive's USB plug, plus a slightly reduced price, it might be closer to the top. PhotoFast actually has one: The i-FlashDrive HD is a flash drive for the iPad, iPhone, and Mac. The write time was a middle-of-the-road 12.3 MBps. The 8GB version of the Lightning didn't have the superior speed rating claims of its 4GB brother, but it still managed to perform as well as the others we tested, with the second-best read time of 26.8 megabytes per second. ![]() It doesn't claim Linux support, but it worked fine when plugged into an Ubuntu box. The Lightning also handles storage under Windows ME and Mac OS X. PowerToGo works in Windows Vista, XP, and 2000. Other apps you can download include Google Toolbar, RoboForm, Skype, ThunderBird, Trillian, and WinAmp. Installing Firefox to the USB drive allowed access to the app directory via that browser. PowerToGo was loading IE from the USB drive, not the hard drive, which is exactly what it's meant to do. Initially, I was annoyed that PowerToGo would use only Internet Explorer-which is not my default browser-to access the directory, but there was a good reason. Any apps you want to run from PowerToGo must be downloaded first to the Lightning via Ceedo's Web-based directory of programs. It uses a pop-up menu that mimics the Windows XP Start menu, from which you can access and run applications from the USB drive. PowerToGo is powered by technology from Ceedo. The download works only with Lexar drives it wouldn't install on others. External storage for iPads and iPhones can be tricky to use, so we are going to walk you through using a USB (also called a flash drive or thumb drive) with both an iPhone and an iPad. Luckily, Lexar offers it as a download in case you've deleted it. Sometimes we run out of space on our Apple devices. The company says it should have been there. My test unit arrived without the much-hyped (on the drive's package, at least) PowerToGo software installed. It also features a "file shredder" to ensure that deleted files are never recovered. ![]() The Secure II software made by Lexar works under Windows XP, 2000, and with Mac OS X to create a secured folder (called a Vault) or just to secure individual files. There are no hardware extras with the Lightning. It's shiny enough for a raccoon to covet, but the more you use it, the more it gets marred with fingerprints. The long drive (60mm by 23mm by 12mm) has a hole at one end wide enough to let you put the drive on a key ring, but then there's no place to stick the cap. There's no retractable USB plug (which really should be standard in all USB flash drives by now), just the old stick-with-cap design. The Lightning's design is relatively old-fashioned.
